Curriculum
Information regarding our curriculum can be found in our Prospectus. Please click on links for guides to help parents and carers understand how children progress in English and Maths at each ‘old’ National Curriculum level plus useful websites for enrichment: ‘Understanding Progress in English’ and ‘Understanding Progress in Maths’. Whilst you should be aware that there are no longer ‘levels’ in the new National Curriculum (children are now assessed as ’emerging’, ‘expected’, ‘exceeded’ these guides should still prove helpful. Please click here to access the letter sent home to parents regarding the new assessment procedures in June 2015 and here to access ‘The new national curriculum in English Primary Schools – A Guide for Parents’ booklet. Please click here to access the link regarding information for parents about Mastery in Maths.

Swimming and water safety
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. At
Burham CE Primary School all our Key Stage 2 children receive swimming lessons:
Year 6 Term 1
Year 5 Term 2
Year 4 Term 3
Year 3 Term 4
Our pupils are taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
100% of Year 6 (2017) achieved their target.

Phonics Progression Tracking Sheet. This shows the progression through the phases of the Letters and Sounds phonics programme that the school uses as a basis for the teaching of phonics. It sets out the expectation within and for each stage. The children are individually placed on the appropriate space on the grid in relation to their progression through the phases. This is tracked 6 times a year. The groups the children work in are adjusted accordingly, however they may be changed between formal assessment periods.
